Malpensa to St. Moritz: The Winter Run
February 2026
The transfer from Malpensa to St. Moritz is roughly 230 kilometres and takes three to four hours depending on the season, the pass and the traffic at the border. It is one of our most requested winter routes — and one of the routes where the choice of vehicle genuinely matters.
The routing
There are two main options: through Switzerland via the A2 motorway over the Gotthard (or the Gotthard rail tunnel if the road is closed), or the longer but more scenic route via Lugano and the Maloja Pass. The Maloja is the preferred approach in good conditions — the descent into the Engadine valley is one of the great alpine drives. In heavy snow or poor visibility, we take the tunnel.
The border crossing
Chiasso is the standard crossing point. It is generally straightforward with an EU passport; non-EU passengers should carry the physical document and be prepared for a brief stop. Swiss customs do occasionally check vehicles. Your driver will have the necessary vehicle documentation.
Timing recommendations
For a same-day arrival, land at Malpensa no later than 2 p.m. in good weather conditions. In January and February, when snowfall is unpredictable, we recommend landing by noon and leaving buffer. A delayed flight combined with a heavy snowfall on the Maloja can add two hours to the journey.
The right vehicle for the crossing
The Range Rover Autobiography is the vehicle of choice for St. Moritz. The all-terrain capability is reassuring on an icy Maloja descent, and the interior — heated rear seats, extended legroom, cabin silence — makes three hours in an alpine January feel like something other than a transfer. The Mercedes V-Class is the alternative for larger groups or more luggage.
Ski equipment
Skis, boot bags and poles fit in the V-Class without problem. The Range Rover can accommodate two sets of skis in bags in the boot alongside three suitcases, but for four sets or more, the V-Class is the practical choice. Mention your equipment when booking and we will confirm the vehicle configuration.
The return
The return to Malpensa for a flight works best with a morning departure. Leave St. Moritz by 7 a.m. for a 12 p.m. flight; by 6 a.m. for an 11 a.m. departure in winter conditions. We have made this drive in every condition — we will give you an honest timing estimate when you book.
